City Council Meetings

The Fort Worth City Council typically meets every other week, and there is an afternoon meeting (without public comment) at 12pm and an evening meeting (with opportunity for public comment) at 6:00pm.

Fort Worth Mayor

The Mayor is elected directly by the citizens and serves for two year terms. The Mayor officially speaks for both the government and the community as a whole. The Mayor is the presiding officer and a regular member of the city council, and has all the powers and duties for the office of council member in addition to those of mayor.

The Fort Worth Mayor makes $29,000 per year.

Responsibilities
  • Serving on the city council;
  • Voting in council meetings;
  • Assigning council members to chair or serve on committees;
  • Appointing citizens to serve on advisory boards or commissions;
  • Preparing the annual budget; or

Fort Worth City Councilmembers

Here are your city council members who are elected to represent your voice in the Fort Worth city council. The Council fulfills the legislative functions of the city, crafting ordinances and developing policies. They are also tasked with establishing the overall direction of the city and providing general direction to the city manager.

It is important the city council represents and advocates for the community’s diverse beliefs and values to serve ALL residents in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Council members make $25,000 per year.

Responsibilities
  • Elected to two or four year terms either by district or at-large.
  • Responsible for appointing a city-manager.
  • Responsible for drafting and passing legislation and city ordinances.
  • Responsible for approving the city budget proposed by the city-manager.

As local legislators, councilmembers are responsible for and responsive to the citizens who elected them. Depending on the city’s charter and state laws, they may perform the following functions:

  • Review and approve the annual budget;
  • Establish long- and short-term objectives and priorities;

Here are the qualifications for what it takes to run for the City Council.

Resident of the City

for at least 12 consecutive months

Qualified voter

of the State of Texas

Can't hold any other public office

of emolument except as permitted by the Texas Constitution.

No person shall be eligible to the office of councilmember

who shall be interested in the profits or the emolument of any contract job, work or service for the city, or interested in the sale to the city of any supplies, equipment, material or articles purchased.
